The introduction of Surah Fatiha given by Prophet Muhammabd SAWW is enough to know the value of this precious Surah. The Prophet SAWW said:

“Do you want me to teach you a Surah the like of which has not been revealed in the Torah, the Injeel, the Zabur, nor the Quran?”, and also asked what He recited in His prayers. 

He replied Umm-ul-Quran (Surah Fatiha) the Prophet (P.B.U.H) proclaimed, ‘By Him in Whose dominion my soul is, nothing like it has been revealed in the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, or the Quran and it is seven of the oft-repeated verses in the Mighty Quran which I have been given.”

Revelation of Al-Fatiha:

This Surah was revealed in Mecca as stated by Ibn Abbas, Qatadah and Abu’l-Aliyah, before the migration of Prophet SAWW to Medina.


Other Names of Al-Fatiha:

There are many names of Surah Fatiha, some of them are listed below


1. Ash-Shifa: Means The Cure. 

The Messenger(PBUH) of Allah said:

“The Opening of the Book is a cure to every poison.”

2. Umm-ul-Quran or Umm-ul-Kitab: Means Mother of the Quran/Book.

Prophet SAWW said that:

“The chapter commencing with “All praises and thanks are due to Allah the Lord of the Worlds” is the Mother of the Quran, the Mother of the Book, the Seven Oft Repeated Verses and the 

Great Quran.”

3. Asas-al-Quran: Means the Basis of Quran. 

Surah Fatiha is given this name because it contains the most essential fundamental teachings of Islam.


4. Sab-ul-Mathani: Means The Seven Often Repeated Verses. 

As Surah Fatiha is recited at the start of every rakaah of the prayer so it is called by this name.


5. Ar-Ruqyah: Means the Spiritual Cure. 

Surah Fatiha is highly recommender to be recited for the sick ones because Abu Sa’id reported that when he had recited it to cure a person bitten by a scorpion, the Messenger(PBUH) of 

Allah asked him,

“…And what made you to know that it was a ruqya.”

6. As-Salah: Means The Prayer. 

It is given this name because this Surah is must for the the prayer to be accepted.


7. Al-Hamd: Means Praises to Allah.

Surah Al-Fatiha is also known as Al-Hamd, the Commendation, because it contains the Adoration of the Allah Almighty. 


Significance of Al-Fatiha:

The importance of this Surah can be can be judged by the following


1. Sent from Heaven as light

Prophet SAWW said that there are two lights from heaven, one is Fatiha and the other is Baqarah.

2. The Greatest chapter in the Quran

Prophet SAWW said to his companion that he would teach him the greatest chapter in the Holy Quran, then he SAWW taught him Surah Al-Fatiha.

3. The Most Noble Part of Quran

Holy Prophet SAWW said that:

“Should I not inform you of the most noble and excellent part of the Quran?” He (SAWW) then recited “All praise and thanks are due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds”.

4. The pillar of Salah

Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that:

“Whoever does not recite Surat Al-Fatihah in his prayer, his prayer is invalid".

5. A Cure for the Heart

This surah protects our heart from getting evil intentions. It acts as a prayer that protects one from the anger of Allah and misguidance. 


6. A Cure for the Disease

A companion of Holy Prophet SAWW recited Surah Al-Fatiha after a scorpion bite. On seeing this, Prophet Muhammad SAWW asked him saying, 

“How did you know it was a Cure (Ruqyah)?”

7. The Seven Often Repeated Verses

It is mentioned in Verse number 87 of Surah Al Hijr that:

“And We have certainly given you, [O Muhammad], seven of the often repeated [verses] and the great Qur’an.” 

[Quran, 15: 87]

Surah Fatiha is known as seven often repeated verses because it is recited in every prayer every day.


8. Mother of the Quran

Prophet SAWW said that Surah Fatiha is the Mother of Quran, Mother of the Book as well as seven repeated verses of it are the great recitation.

  1. Recitation of Surah Fatiha for 3 times gives the reward of reciting 2 Quran Majeed.
  2. Recite of this Surah 41 times between the Sunna And Fard of Namaz-e-Fajr, blow it on water, and give it to any patient. He will recover soon.
  3. For curing poison, Surah Fatiha is very effective.
  4. Recite Surah Fatiha 100 times before every pray and it will surely be assented.
  5. In very pain recite Surat Fatiha, the pain will vanished.
  6. Hazrat Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) says: Surah al Fatiha is Cure from every illness. So this surah is labeled as As-Shifa.  
  7. One must recite Surah Fatiha if he or she is in debt or facing poverty.
  8. It also secures us from the fears of the Enemy, jealousy and evil eye.
  9. Surah Fatiha is the dua that Allah SWT taught himself to the people.


In short, Surah Fatiha is the most outstanding part of the Quran because it contains Islamic teachings in concise form.
