 Surah Al-Baqarah

Baqarah means "The Cow". Surah Baqarah is the second surah of Quran Kareem containing 40 rukus, 286 verses, 6201 words and 25,500 letters. It is spread over 48 full pages of Quran Kareem. It is the longest Surah of Quran.

Revelation of Al-Baqarah:

This Surah was revealed in Madina, after the migration of Prophet SAWW. So it is a Madni-Surah.

How Long does it take to recite:

If you are a fluent reciter, then it takes about an hour to recite it fully and if you are a beginner, then recitation of Surah Baqarah will take 2 to 3 hours. It all depends on how fluent you are with Arabic.

Virtues of Surah Al-Baqarah

1. Angels come down to listen Al-Baqarah

Usayd ibn Hudayr RA was a Campanion of Rasulullah SAWW. Once a miraculous event happened with him. The event is mentioned as:

“That while he was reciting Surat Al-Baqarah at night, and his horse was tied beside him, the horse was suddenly startled and troubled. When he stopped reciting, the horse became quiet, and when he started again, the horse was startled again. Then he stopped reciting and the horse became quiet too. He started reciting again and the horse was startled and troubled once again."

He RA said that 

'I was afraid lest it should trample (my son) Yahya. I stood near (the horse) and saw something like a canopy over my head with what seemed to be lamps in it, rising up in the sky till it disappeared.’

He RA explained that incident to Prophet SAWW, on which he (SAWW) responded:

‘Do you know what that was?’

Usayd Ibn Hudair RA replied:

‘No.’

Prophet SAWW said:

‘Those were Angels who came near to you for your voice and if you had kept on reciting till dawn, it would have remained there till morning when people would have seen it as it would not 

have disappeared.’ ”

2. Surah Baqarah will Intercede for You

The Prophet of Mercy SAWW said that

“On the Day of Judgement, the Quran and those who acted according to it will be brought, with Surat Baqarah and AI-Imran preceding them.” 

-Muslim 805

3. Two Clouds on the Dooms Day

Prophet SAWW said that

"The Quran shall come, and its people who acted according to it in the world. Surah Baqarah and Surah Imran shall be in front of it. They will come as if they are two shades between which there is illumination, or as if they are Two Shady Clouds, or as if they are shadows of lines of birds arguing on behalf of their people."

4. The last 2 verses-Gift of Shab-e-Meraaj 

The last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah are bestowed upon our Prophet SAWW during Shab-e-Meraj as a gift. It is mentioned in a Hadith that

"When the Messenger of Allah (S.A.W.) was taken on the Night Journey … He said: "It was moths of gold. And I was given three things: The five daily prayers, the last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah, ……”

5. The 10 Verses of Surah Baqarah

Abdullah Ibn Masud RA said that

‘Whoever recites the following 10 Verses of Surah Baqarah in the morning, 

- will be saved from Shaitaan till the evening, and whoever recites it in the evening will be protected from Shaitaan till the morning.

- will not experience unpleasant surprises in his family or wealth.

- If these verse are recited on an insane person, he will be cured.

(Sunan Darimi, Hadith: 3382 & Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 2412)

- Whoever recites these ten verses before sleeping, will not forget the Quran.

(Sunan Darimi, Hadith: 3385 & Shu’abul Iman, Hadith: 2413)

These 10 Verses are of Surah Baqarah are:

-The first four verses

-Ayatul Kursi and two aayat after it

-The last three verses

Benefits of Surah Al-Baraqah

- Shaitan does not enter that house where Surah Baqarah is recited. As the Prophet SAWW said that:

"Do not turn your houses into graves. Verily, Shaitan does not enter the house where Surah baqarah is recited."    -Tirmidhi

On another occasion, Prophet SAWW said that:

“Indeed Allah wrote in a book two thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth, and He sent down two Ayahs (verses) from it to end Surah al Baqarah with. If they are recited for three nights in a home, no Shaitan (devil) shall come near it.”     -Tirmidhi

- Surah baqarah protects a person from evil-eye and witch-craft

- Surah Baqarah brings a great reward on The Day of Judgement. The Messenger(PBUH) of Allah said that:

“Recite the Quran, for on the Day of Resurrection it will come as an intercessor for those who recite It. Recite the two bright ones, al-Baqarah, and Surah Al ‘Imran, for on the Day of Resurrection they will come as two clouds or two shades, or two flocks of birds in ranks, pleading for those who recite them. Recite Surah al-Baqarah, to take recourse to it is a blessing and to give it up is a cause of grief, and the magicians cannot confront it.”     -Muslim

-The last two verses of Surah Baqarah are one of the most memorized verses among Muslims. About the last 2 verses, Prophet SAWW has mentioned that:

“Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah by night that will suffice him”     -Bukhari

-This Surah brings barakah to our time, wealth, children and life.

Ayatul Kursi in Surah Baqarah:

The Verse number 255 of Surah Baqarah is known as 'Ayatul Kursi' which means The Verse of Throne. Ayatul Kursi is known as Sayyadul-Aayatul-Quran which means 'Chief of all Verses of the Quran'.  Ayatul Kursi mentions the names of Allah, Most High more than any other verse. The names of Allah SWT have been mentioned 14 times. Ayat al-Kursi is regarded as one of the most powerful ayah in the Quran.

- The Messenger of Allah PBUH has said that everything has a hump and the hump of the Quran is Surah Al-Baqarah. There is a verse in it that is the Chief of all Verses of the Quran, the Ayat-ul-Kursi.

- Prophet SAWW mentioned that there is an Ayah in Surah Baqarah which is Sayyadul-Aayatul-Quran and it is The Verse of Throne (Ayatul Kursi).

- Prophet Muhammad SAWW said that 3 Aayahs of Quran Kareem contains Ism-e-Azam (The Great Name) of Allah SWT and Ayatul Kursi is one of them. 

- The Messenger(PBUH) of Allah says that Shaitaan leaves that house where Ayatul is recited.

- In one of his sayings, Bab-ul-Ilm Hazrat Ali RA said that Ayatul Kursi is the leader Ayahs of Quran Kareem. 

Different Ways of Reading Surah Baqarah

Based on above mentioned Virtues and Benefits of this Surah Mubarikah, it can be recited in following ways:

- Reciting the entire Surah in one sitting

- Reciting Ayatul Kursi after Every obligatory prayer

- Reciting the last 2 Verses of Surah Baqarah before sleeping

- Reciting Ayatul Kursi and the last 2 Verses before sleeping

- Reciting the entire Surah Daily or Frequently + Ayatul Kursi after Every obligatory prayer + the last 2 Verses before sleeping

We must try our best to memorize verses such as the Ayat al-Kursi and the last two verses of Surah al-Baqarah or those 10 verses. May Allah enable us all to bring His verses into our hearts.
